Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Apple Vision OCR) from a scan of a newspaper page, and the page was cut into articles by machine, at the headlines found by their type size. Nothing has been corrected: expect misread words, text from a neighbouring article, and titles that are the machine reading of the headline, some of them only fragments. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: headline found by type size in the OCR geometry (split_tabloid.py); 3-6 of 6; machine-segmented newspaper page; uncorrected Vision OCR.

THE IMAGE of women is, of distorted by the newspapers, which at the same time are happy to suppress news and information on women's rights. la Hull, this censorship also extends to the advertising columes, When the Hull Working Women's Charter Group recently held a conference encitled "Women's Oppres by PAULINESTANTON sion', we arrempted to advertise ir in the Hull Doily Mail. When the secretary of the group first ring the paper she was told after a pause — that as the title of the conference might cause offence!), she would have to to placebe advert.

When then ensued was a ridiculous charade of taking the advert in, being told by the counter staff that it would bave to be dealt with over the phone and then, no, it couldn't, etc. Theadvert never appeared.

Meanwhile, the National Front is regularly allowed to advertise in the paper, as is the anti-abortion Life outfit. The National Abortiou Campaign hashad its adverts banned.

The Working Women's Charter Group in Hull has complained to the local branch of the National Union of Journalists and to SLADE. We bave also written to the editor of the Hual Duity Mail, which happens to be owned by Westminster Press - the company resisting the demand for a closed shop by journalists in Darlington because this would be a threat to "press froedom'!
