Uncorrected machine reading. This text was read by machine (Apple Vision OCR) from a scan of a newspaper page, and the page was cut into articles by machine, at the headlines found by their type size. Nothing has been corrected: expect misread words, text from a neighbouring article, and titles that are the machine reading of the headline, some of them only fragments. Quote from the scan, not from this page.
How this article was cut and titled: headline found by type size in the OCR geometry (split_tabloid.py); 6-7 of 7; machine-segmented newspaper page; uncorrected Vision OCR.

London N1. Adm. 50p IN your feature on the NUPE claim (18 January) you use the concept of the average wage to justify the claim. This is misconceived for two reasons Firstly, because it sets one group of workers against another — it's really another case of the special pleading which you rightly criticise. Secondly, it betrays an uncritical approach to official statistics, which we must remember are never ideologically neutral - for example they tend to lump community rather than clarifying class divisions.

For the statisticians it is never a question of workers and capitalists but of at least five distinct 'socio-economic groups. The idea of the average wage is particularly misleading because it hides the fact that, as there are a small number on very high pay and a large number on low pay, the average will always be higher than most people earn.

The left must justify the wages struggle on other grounds than comparisons with some mythical average. GEORGE GRIME (Uxbridge)
